IF THERE IS A HEAVEN IT IS HERE

concept

The table, which I sawed into two parts in Episode 1 in the performance «IF THERE IS» I ask one exhibition visitor at a time to sit at the table with me. I read out the sentence that is written on the two parts: «IF THERE IS A HEAVEN» «IT IS HERE IN EARTH» and ask them «Right or Wrong». The person sitting opposite is thus invited to the conversation. The conversations are often very personal, people talk about their life situations, their wishes and disappointments, their expectations of 'the world'.
I ask them after a while, depending on how the conversation goes, if they want to know where the sentence comes from. Until now, everyone has wanted to know where the sentence comes from: from a 13th century Sufi poet from Kashmir, named Amir Khusro or Khusrau or Khusrow, also that the sentence is anchored in the cultural memory of Kashmir and is now also used for tourist purposes.
Towards the end of each conversation, I give a sheet of paper with a photocopied image writing from the Facebook site of the Kashmir-based artist Hina Arif. Her image writing hangs on the wall next to the table installation and and interview situation. Hina Arif's paintings are also projected in the exhibition. The image writibg shows in Persian script the sentence IF THERE IS A HEAVEN IT IS HERE ON EARTH crossed out, below it the date 19.8.2019. I received this hint after the performance in episode 1, when I sawed the table, by email from Indian Salim on 28 March:

«Dear Dorothea,
Image attached is by Hina Arif.
The drawing of the text which u used to cut into two during performance in Basel.
It is same in persian language»

At the very end of the conversation, I ask the interlocutor to let me have a short sentence that summarizes the conversation, so to speak, or a sentence from the conversation that seemed important to him/her, which I would record with the initials of the other person, with permission. The conversations last between 5-20 minutes.
